How to get to West Iceland
West Iceland is on the doorstep of Reykjavík the capital and is accessible by car all year round.
An hour or so outside the capital, the land starts to change into something quite extraordinary. This is why travellers love it so much and precisely why the West is best for those with very limited time.
Cycling
For its highlights and short distances, the West is ideal for a cyclist.
By Bus
From the Bus Central Hyrnan in Borgarnes where the bus stops there are regular bus services to other places in West Iceland such as Snaefellsnes peninsula and the north of Iceland several times a day. Also bus services to Dalir district as well as the western fjords . Different timetables for the winter, see www.bogf.is and www.trex.is
Ferry Baldur
The car and passenger ferry, Baldur operates from Stykkisholmur with a stop-over on Flatey island on the way to Brjanslaekur in the West fjords. There are daily tours all year except on national holidays. See Ferry Baldur timetable here.
Flights
There are no scheduled flights to West Iceland, the nearest airport is in Reykjavik.
Airfields
There are some airfields in West Iceland for smaller planes but they are without any service, e.g.: Stori Kroppur in Borgarfjordur, Husafell, Dagverdara on the southern side of Snaefellsnes peninsula, Rif, Stykkisholmur and in Budardal. Kaldarmelar has a grass surface runway.
