For those who enjoy skiing or snowboarding there are fine ski resorts
throughout the country. They are generally open during the winter, snow and circumstances
permitting.
The ski area in Grundarfjörður is located on the slopes above the town’s elementary school and has been an important part of local outdoor life for decades. During the 1980s, volunteers from the Grundarfjörður Youth Association helped develop the area by installing a 600-meter ski lift, building a ski lodge, and purchasing a snow groomer.
In recent years, a younger generation has carried the project forward, working on equipment upgrades, repairs, and improvements to the ski lodge with strong support from residents in Grundarfjörður and across the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.
The slopes themselves remain as popular as ever among skiers and snowboarders. With the ski area located just above town, it’s easy to head up to the slopes—and just as convenient to glide back home after a day in the snow.
