Celebrate Iceland’s Independence Day – June 17

Every year on June 17, Icelanders celebrate Independence Day, marking the founding of the Republic of Iceland in 1944 and the country's independence from Danish rule.

The date was chosen in honour of Jón Sigurðsson (1811–1879), the leader of Iceland's independence movement, whose birthday falls on June 17. He remains one of the nation's most respected historical figures and a symbol of Icelandic self-determination.

Independence Day is celebrated throughout the country with parades, ceremonies, concerts, speeches, and family-friendly events. Communities large and small come together to mark the occasion, often with marching bands, traditional festivities, and outdoor gatherings.

Across West Iceland, towns and villages host a variety of celebrations that highlight local culture, community spirit, and Icelandic heritage. The day offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience national pride and join Icelanders in celebrating their history, culture, and independence.

Whether you're visiting Iceland for the first time or returning to explore more of the country, June 17 is a wonderful day to experience the festive atmosphere and traditions that make Iceland unique.
