Lets talk about…..Akranes
Fishing has shaped Akranes for centuries, and the sea remains at the heart of the town's identity. Strolling through the harbour, visitors can experience a vibrant fishing community while enjoying cafés, local restaurants and scenic waterfront views. The town's maritime heritage is celebrated at the Akranes Folk Museum (Garðasafn), where historic buildings tell the story of everyday life in Iceland through the centuries.

The Iconic Akranes Lighthouses
One of the town's most photographed landmarks is the pair of Akranes Lighthouses. The older lighthouse dates back to 1918, while the striking new lighthouse was built in 1944. Visitors can climb to the top of the newer lighthouse during opening hours for spectacular panoramic views over Faxaflói Bay, Mount Akrafjall and, on clear days, all the way to Snæfellsjökull.

Beaches and Outdoor Adventures
Akranes is home to some of Iceland's most inviting beaches. Langisandur, a Blue Flag-certified beach, is perfect for walking, sea swimming and enjoying views across the bay. Right beside the beach is Guðlaug, a beautifully designed geothermal bathing pool that has quickly become one of West Iceland's most popular attractions. Relaxing in the warm water while listening to the waves is a uniquely Icelandic experience.
For those looking to stretch their legs, Mount Akrafjall rises above the town and offers rewarding hiking trails with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Numerous walking and cycling paths also connect the coastline, parks and nearby nature reserves.

Culture, Sports and Community
Akranes is well known throughout Iceland for its strong sporting traditions, particularly in football, and its active cultural scene. Throughout the year the town hosts festivals, exhibitions and community events that showcase local art, music and history.
The Perfect Gateway to West Iceland
Thanks to its convenient location on the Ring Road, Akranes is an excellent starting point for exploring West Iceland. From here it's an easy drive to the Silver Circle, Hvalfjörður, Borgarfjörður and the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.
Whether you're climbing a lighthouse, soaking in a seaside hot pool, hiking Mount Akrafjall or simply enjoying fresh seafood by the harbour, Akranes offers an authentic Icelandic experience where history, nature and coastal life come together.
