Strong winds expected in West Iceland – strongest on northern Snæfellsnes

A storm is affecting the southern part of the country this morning, with strong easterly and southeasterly winds and rain in many areas. As the day progresses, the winds will shift to a southerly direction. While winds will ease in some parts of the country, strong winds are expected to continue in West Iceland.

Particular caution is advised on northern Snæfellsnes, where winds are expected to be strongest later today. Showers will accompany the southerly winds during the afternoon.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office issued yellow weather warnings for South Iceland and the Faxaflói area from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. Strong winds may pose a hazard to vehicles, particularly those that are vulnerable to crosswinds. Loose objects outdoors may also be blown around.

Milder conditions tomorrow

Today, easterly and southeasterly winds of 13–18 metres per second are expected in many areas, increasing to 18–23 metres per second in the south during the morning. The wind will turn southerly later in the day, reaching 8–18 metres per second, with showers in many areas.

Conditions will improve in northeastern Iceland, while daytime temperatures will range from 6 to 15°C, with the warmest temperatures in the north.

Tomorrow, southerly and southwesterly winds of 10–18 metres per second are expected, along with showers in many areas. The northeast should remain mostly bright, with temperatures between 8 and 14°C.

Residents and travellers in West Iceland, particularly on Snæfellsnes, are advised to monitor weather forecasts closely and exercise caution as winds strengthen.
