How to get to West Iceland
West Iceland is within an hour drive from the capital area.

By bus
The bus network in Iceland is extensive and allows you to travel around the entire country. In addition to Strætó, regional bus services operate in areas such as the East and the Westfjords. When planning your journey, be sure to check both summer and winter schedules, as they can vary. Although buses connect key towns such as Akranes, Stykkishólmur, and Borgarnes, they seldom reach the natural attractions that define the area.
By car
Renting a car is key to exploring West Iceland, as public transportation is limited beyond the capital area. Having your own vehicle also gives you the freedom to set your schedule, allowing you to visit popular destinations during quieter times—such as early morning or late evening—to avoid the crowds.
By ferry
The car ferry Baldur links West Iceland to the Westfjords, operating between Stykkishólmur to Brjánslækur, with a stop at Flatey island along the way.
