Getting around the area

Iceland’s road network is well-developed and generally easy to navigate. Route 1, known as the Ring Road, is the country’s main highway and the most commonly used route.

However, driving in Iceland can be quite different from elsewhere, with conditions ranging from gravel roads to snow, ice, strong winds, and mountain passes.

At times, the greatest challenge may simply be staying focused, as the breathtaking scenery can be incredibly distracting.

Although having a car provides the greatest flexibility, it’s still possible to explore West Iceland using a mix of public buses, rental cars, and guided tours.

The car ferry Baldur links the region to the Westfjords, traveling from Stykkishólmur to Brjánslækur with a stop at Flatey Island along the way.
