Pósthlaup 2026 – Trail Run
Pósthlaup is a 50 km off-road race running from Hrútafjörður to Búðardalur, with a total elevation gain of around 600 meters. The event is organized by the Ósk Rescue Team and UMF Ólafi Pá as a fundraiser, in collaboration with the Icelandic Post Office.
For those looking for shorter distances, participants can also choose from 26 km, 12 km, or 7 km routes—all finishing in Búðardalur.
Race Route
The full 50 km race begins at Bálkastaðir in Hrútafjörður and follows a historic postal route over Haukadalsskarð into Haukadalur. From there, the course continues along Haukadalsvatn, joins the bridge path near Vestfjarðavegur in Dalir, and follows it all the way to Búðardalur.
- 50 km: The first 15 km are steep, followed by a mostly downhill or flat route. The highest point is at Haukadalsskarð.
- 26 km: Starts at Kirkjufellsrétt near Smyrlhóll in Haukadalur, timed with the arrival of 50 km runners.
- 12 km: Begins at a gravel pit near the hunting lodge by the Haukadalsá River.
- 7 km: The final stretch starts at Búðardalur Airport in Kambsnes and runs to Búðardalur, beginning as longer-distance runners approach.
