Pósthlaup 2026 – Trail Run

Pósthlaup is a 50 km off-road race running from Hrútafjörður to Búðardalur, with a total elevation gain of around 600 meters. The event is organized by the Ósk Rescue Team and UMF Ólafi Pá as a fundraiser, in collaboration with the Icelandic Post Office.

For those looking for shorter distances, participants can also choose from 26 km, 12 km, or 7 km routes—all finishing in Búðardalur.

Race Route
The full 50 km race begins at Bálkastaðir in Hrútafjörður and follows a historic postal route over Haukadalsskarð into Haukadalur. From there, the course continues along Haukadalsvatn, joins the bridge path near Vestfjarðavegur in Dalir, and follows it all the way to Búðardalur.

  • 50 km: The first 15 km are steep, followed by a mostly downhill or flat route. The highest point is at Haukadalsskarð.
  • 26 km: Starts at Kirkjufellsrétt near Smyrlhóll in Haukadalur, timed with the arrival of 50 km runners.
  • 12 km: Begins at a gravel pit near the hunting lodge by the Haukadalsá River.
  • 7 km: The final stretch starts at Búðardalur Airport in Kambsnes and runs to Búðardalur, beginning as longer-distance runners approach.

This unique race combines history, scenic landscapes, and a strong community spirit—making it a memorable experience for runners of all levels.
